LUXEMBOURG 2024
After 31 years, the Grand Duchy is back! In a stunningly produced national final (you'd have thought this was Sweden!), they've selected Tali Golergant with her song "Fighter" - let's take a listen:
About the Artist
She just got a Wiki page on Saturday, so I can tell you that she's 23 or 24, of Peruvian and Jewish descent, and currently lives in New York. That's about it.
Best Things We Lost Along the Way
Surprisingly, Luxembourg put together a very good national final on their first try!
- Krick, "Drowning in the Rain", 2nd - The best vocal performance of the night, and the pre-contest favorite. My personal pick, though I'm fine with Tali too.
Song Analysis
Dancy pop song, partly French and partly English. Pretty straightforward. Usually when we get these sorts of songs, it's an internal selection and we don't get to see how well they can sing while dancing - Tali seems at least decent at that. (Better than Aiko, not quite Noa Kirel.)
Luxembourg's History
Well, uh, they haven't participated since 1993, so no last-ten-years here. They are, however, one of the contest's most successful countries with five wins.
My rankings only go back 20 years, so no Luxembourgish rankings here. Instead, here are their five winners:
Notably, none of these people are from Luxembourg - Vicky Leandros is German, and the other four are French. Pascal, notably, was Eurovision's first (very closeted) gay winner, and his song is pretty obvious in meaning once you know that.
Prognosis
I'm not sure this feels like a qualifier to me, but I bet it makes it through - it's a competently performed pop song, and pretty much anything fitting that description qualified last year. Hard to assess who'll vote for Luxembourg, but if I were Tali, I'd hope for France, Belgium, and Germany to be voting in my semifinal (we'll find out tomorrow).
We do know that Luxembourg is 15% Portuguese for some reason (this national final had a Marques, a Da Silva, and a Pires), so if the duchy has an opportunity to vote for Portugal, they'll send a lot of points their way.
