UNITED KINGDOM 2024

Olly Alexander was announced as the UK's entry in December. After a couple months of snippets and hints, we have his song "Dizzy":

About the Artist

Olly Alexander is a very well-established pop singer from Harrogate, Yorkshire. He started out as an actor on stage and screen, notably receiving a BAFTA nomination for It's A Sin in 2021. His music career has been going on since 2010, first as the lead singer of Years & Years, now as a solo artist. With Years & Years, he had two #1 albums and a #1 hit in "King".

Song Analysis

It seems like a lot of people are disappointed by this. Maybe it's because British people are just like that, maybe because we've had two months to hype this up. But I'm pretty sure this is good! I do wish it built up a bit more, but likely we'll get some vocal theatrics on stage.

The United Kingdom's History

Well. Until 2003, the UK were Eurovision royalty - 5 wins, 15 runner-ups, no last places. Then Jemini happened in Riga, and things went downhill. Since 2003, the UK have only made the top ten twice, with five last-place finishes. The highlights have been pretty good, admittedly, and they got to host in 2023, but yeesh.

Unsurprisingly, the UK end up 41st of 48 countries this century. I do genuinely love these top three though, so it's not all rubbish.

Prognosis

Based on the reaction to this...probably not great. There's a lot that's similar to this (Lithuania, Switzerland, Belgium) and it could easily get ignored in favor of those. Olly's a good live singer, though, and this should be staged pretty well. Maybe the left side of the scoreboard is possible?
